"Originally conceptualized by Cuscino in late 1997, Paragon Null came to fruition in early 1998 with the release of the Falsified EP, described in Dead Zine as "a definite must have." This release showcased a dark, metallic-tinged industrial sound. Record label attention soon followed, and Paragon Null signed to Glass Diamond Records. Glass Diamond released the Clockwork Flux EP in the summer of 1998. This release displayed a stripped-down, bare-bones Paragon Null delving into drum & bass, old-school techno, and trance, while still adding their own original flavor. this cdr release is far different from their earlier cassettes. this time most of the guitars and heavy industrial rock/metal stuff has been dropped in lieu of more trance influenced electronica with some drum n bass beats and techno. a couple of the tracks on the harder more 'industrial/metal' tape "Falsified" appear here in a remixed form.

review from ballistic test zine:
"The last time Paragon Null appeared in recorded form was on Velvet Empire's Digital Assimilation compilation, with a couple instrumental techno-trancy offerings. The band builds on that style here, offering listeners an electronic-based trip through a number of different dance genres including everything from old-school techno to trance to drum'n'bass. The programming is generally danceable and quite good, with some especially nice bass lines throughout. Meanwhile, in the filler category, a couple segments consist of little more than some background ambience while long vocal samples play through.
What makes Paragon Null stand out from other bands in this market is the vocals. Whereas most others would have either the cheesy dance vocals or none at all, PN takes a darker and more interesting approach. The band's intriguing lyrics are presented in a harsh whispered style that gives everything a much edgier feel. Interesting and sometimes ominous samples add to the effect. The net result is pretty cool.

On the negative side, the mixing is not great, especially with regard to the samples. In a number of cases, a vocal snippet will jump in loud enough to give you a start if you're not prepared for it. Also, in "Stealing Gravity", the piano line (although cool) doesn't quite jive tempo-wise with the drum'n'bass percussion. Some extra time could've been spent smoothing those things out a bit.

Despite these small setbacks, the CD is definitely worth listening to for fans of almost any type of electronic music. With the promise this band has shown, it's time to put the effort into a quality full-length release (at just under 30 minutes, this isn't quite a full-length). And with the obvious hard work that they're putting into getting themselves "out there", it won't be long before they come through with just that.

Cornucopia/Musique:Motpol - "60 Years" (2000 public eyesore)

cornucopia's "permanent war economy" starts off with 10 minutes of slow harsh noise, almost wall, and leads into what sounds like the second act. this segment is punctuated with moments of silence, higher tones, and some interesting new sounds. after a few minutes of this we're about half way through and a 3rd part seems to start with migrane inducing high frequencies drunkenly smashing into each other on a midnight run. eventually they fall over and start rolling around on the ground and then head over heels down a sludge covered hill.

the remainder of this long track takes all of the elements from the first parts, adds to it, drops them all in and out, gives 'em the blender action, stop start, wait...slow now, lets quietly contemplate what is happening, and rip out the eyes, and fight and die.

Musique:Motpol is up next starting with "keeping a lid on things" which strikes me as almost meditative. don't get me wrong though, this isn't a recording of gentle nature sounds. a wave of subdued static and feedback takes you off into strange thoughts while another rising set of layers grows into the monster in the story, ultimately falling to sleep...or passing into a coma near the end. "liberty and justice for some" introduces itself by limping in on some overdriven glitch noises accompanied by what sounds like sped up vocal tape loops before blasting off into some nice undulating harsh noise waves which keep building upon themselves. in the last quarter the bottom drops out and we hear in more detail several other elements of feedback, the source and seemingly some cranky found sound bits.

"island in the sun" wastes no time. from the get it is a blast of dense wall noise. just minutes later this base is joined by several other noises and layers floating in and out which really adds to the dynamic feel of the piece. fantastic progression of this action until about the last minute or so when the 'harsh' fades a bit and very satisfyingly leads us to the end.

"vieques libre" begins with ambient feedback, a sweet crawl phasing for the first half of the track. this evolves into a definite intensity in the second half eventually morphing into an emphasis on one heavy tone before it all ends. most of this material seems clearly to tell a story in the traditional sense. awesome stuff.

"*"too many little problems to fix" begins the disc with a short clipped out feedback and synth noise track fitting of its title.

"a toe in the water" comes next with digital static whir starting things off before introducing bass tones and crunchy percussive elements. high pitched tones jump and jag over the top, popping in and out as they please,

followed by noise loops which fall in on themselves before turning back to bass noise crunch and the introduction of quiet segments offset by manipulated vocal and synth repetitions. The track picks up the pace again with bassy thumps, leaving room for quiet moments here and there punctuated by frequent returns to the blender...

"hickory remix" is a short piece (1:27) derived from source material recorded during the "hickory" sessions in 2004/2005 consisting of feedback, screams, grunts and pitch shifted voice.

the sound of the first half of title track, "abiding stream" is anything but, with its out of the blue left turns, juttering stop/starts, delay and cut up bits of loud then quiet noise soup. The second half somehow wanders around and melts into a noisy ambient sludge which steps just a bit quicker than the drone it could have been if it had been drop kicked down several notes and minutes before switching into the feedback,reverb,echo,screaming sounds of lackthrow circa 2002.

"abiding stream" conceptually, as a noise 'stream of consciousness' type thing? sure.

there is definitely a digital handprint on this one, despite the many analogue sources, so if that turns you off, you've been warned.*"

"This is probably the rarest of all PACrec "business card" CD-R's, seeing as it was released strictly for Taint's performance at the Deadly Actions V festival in France back in November of 2002, and copies of the release (which is limited to a mere 40 numbered pieces) were only available at the show. Out of nowhere one showed up in my mailbox as a gift, so I must thank those behind such a gracious act! "...I'm a Whore" offers up just over four minutes of earsplitting power electronics with a truly aggressive assault of bare bones harsh noise as its backdrop. I take that back, the bare bones harsh noise is actually the foreground, as crunching distortion, piercing feedback, and chaotic vibrations crush forth while heavily manipulated vocal shouts go to work in the distance. There's actually some diversity at hand as well, because while the overall delivery is consistent, there are some noticeable shifts from time to time, mainly in the level of sheer brutality that's laid out on the table. Very nice. The CD-R comes in a small plastic sleeve with a full color sticker on the front showing a young girl with a black eye and a torn dress. The sticker on the back is all text and provides the dates and location of the festival, etc. Tacked to the corner of the sleeve is a Taint pin (a hand carrying a boxcutter), and folded up inside the sleeve is a small flyer for the show, which also featured Schloss Tegal, Strom.ec, and Operation Cleansweep, among others. All in all this is an excellent release, and one of the best for PACrec, standing out both musically and on the packaging front. Good work. (8/10)"

*my two cents: solid as solid gets. this is a fantastic heavy ass death metal tape. however, there's one track here found to be really lacking...the title track of all things. ordinarily i'd like the spice of different vocal styles and additional lady singin', but on this track...oh HELL NO. sorry, its just no good. politics aside, the sung parts are awfully melodramatic. the shouted vocals also point out that the less clear metanoia's vocals are the better. musically the song is fine, but...ah screw it, just my two cents.
