Penitent - "as life fades away" (1998 Draenor Productions)

feels 100's of years old in the best way.
current genre labels don't really apply so much.
strangely enough this sounds a bit more hopeful to these ears than much other penitent.
beautiful compositions hearkening back to another age.

sanctum - "let's eat" (2004 cold meat industry)

sanctum returned here with a different line up..though the core of the band and its creative center remained intact.
bit of a different sound, but still distinctly "sanctum".
always very good stuff.  anything from these blokes is worth buying. i've bought just about everything they've churned out in the last 20 years and i've yet to be disappointed.

Arcana - "Dark Age of Reason" (1996 Cold Meat Industry)

amazing debut from Arcana, dark and emotional, evoking a time long since passed, a gothic film score, a neoclassical re-interpretation of beautiful poetry...
"... Comparisons to Dead Can Dance will be made, and they are inevitable and justified, with Arcana's approach to intrumentation and compositions nearly identical to something like De Profundis off of Dead Can Dance's 'Spleen and Ideal'. (...) woefully baroque wood winds, gently plucked strings, flowing violin orchestrations, beautiful piano melodies, and of course, the heavenly blending of baritone and soprano vocals courtesy of Peter Petterson and the beautiful Ida Bengtsson. Yes, it's all been done before in some form or another, but who am I to chastise the band for doing it this damn good?"
-- Jason Mantis, Audio Drudge, Issue. 7

Sanctum - "Lupus In Fabula" (1996 cold meat industry)

what a terrific cd.
sounds every bit as fresh today as it did over 10 years ago.
"lupus in fabula" is full of beautiful compositions containing various stringed instruments(excellent use of the cello), male and female vocals, ambient elements, harsh industrial, neo-classical flourishes and truly haunting stories of light and dark.
a beautiful and chilling thought provoking experience, this is not to be missed.

also, be sure to check out THE CRESCENS COLLECTIVE, which continues as a branch of the guys behind sanctum, putting out excellent product still.

FATA MORGANA

the full length, self-titled debut of Mortiis side project Fata Morgana is some pretty sweet fairytale medieval influenced ambient, much like some of his earlier 'era 1' ambience.
the follow up ep is outdated sounding techno (it sounded outdated when it was released) experiments with some of the ambient elements added.  (they sound nothing alike)
enjoy.
